DUAL LANGUAGE ACADEMY

Our Program Goals:

 

  • Developing fluency in communication and literacy in two languages, English and Spanish.
  • Acquiring knowledge in all academic subjects as outlined in the Tulsa Public School’s district guidelines.
  • Cultivating understanding and appreciation of other cultures, inspiring self-esteem, and strengthening positive attitudes among students, their families and communities.
  • Providing parents the opportunity to become involved in their child’s school experience.

 

Program Design:

  • Social Studies and Science will be taught in Spanish.  Math will be taught in English.  Literacy from Pre-K to first grade will be taught in Spanish or English depending on the dominant language of the child.  However, literacy starting from second grade to fifth grade will be taught in both English and Spanish.  Through bilingual pair activities and bilingual centers, students will develop academic vocabulary in all core subjects in both languages.

    Teachers engage students in active participation activities requiring responses in the target languages. Hands-on classroom projects provide additional opportunities for students to use the target language. Teachers use a reciprocal-interactive approach and cooperative learning techniques to encourage students to interact with one another in the second languages.
  • All students receive instruction in music, p.e. and art. These “specials” are taught in English.

Curriculum: The curriculum at Dual Language Academy is the same curriculum taught at all Tulsa Public Schools as far as the standards and objectives, the only difference being they are taught in Spanish and English. Teachers use specific language learning strategies to ensure the content is understood and the child progresses toward mastery. Once the child has mastered the skill or objective they will continue on to the next standard with differentiation for those students performing below or above the standard.

 

 

Class Configuration Components:

 

  • Balanced Population - 1/2 "native" English speakers and 1/2 "native" Spanish speakers.

 

  • Balanced Instruction - Language, Literacy, and content area instruction is provided in both languages to all students.

 

The Benefits

 

  • Educational Students are capable of achieving high levels of proficiency in a second language without detrimental effects to their primary language development. Higher level thinking skills are continually used and develop the brain in a more efficient manner. Research indicates learning an additional language is much easier for those who are already bilingual.

 

  • Cognitive Bilingual students perform better on tasks that call for divergent thinking, pattern recognition, and problem solving. Bilingual students also have advanced levels of linguistic awareness. They use strategies to figure out the relationships between what is happening and what is being said. Since most social interactions are by choice, the motivation to understand is so strong it encourages student learning.

 

  • Socio-Cultural By interacting with peers who are fluent in the target language, students are exposed to appropriate social conventions of language. Proficiency in two languages also permits individuals to expand their world and increase their cultural competency.

What role do parents play in the school?

  • Parents of children in immersion programs should maintain an active role in their children's education by providing experiences that help develop their target language skills.
  • Parents need to read to children daily in English or Spanish and engage them in activities to extend what they are learning in class.
  • Families are also asked to make a long-term commitment to the immersion program for children to experience the maximum benefits of an immersion education.
  • Parents involvement in school activities show the child that education is very important to the family.

Parents can support their child in these ways:

  • Develop an understanding of immersion education.
  • Provide experiences outside of school to develop bilingual language skills.
  • Encourage the use of the second language outside of school.
  • Be sure your child attends school regularly.
  • Volunteer at school and in your child's classroom.  Various volunteer opportunities exist in the school.

Is the Immersion option open to all pre-k students in the Tulsa district:

  • Dual Language Academy is open to any pre-k child whose family values learning a second language during the elementary school year.  However, immersion may not be a good fit for every child or every family.
  • The Immersion Program is a long-term commitment.  Electing immersion because a friend or neighbor made that choice is not wise.  Make your decision based on the best interest of your child.
